What Counts As A Tree Emergency

Any of these, call or text (780) 266-1919 and send a photo:

  • A tree or a big limb down on the house, garage, car, or fence
  • A limb that’s cracked and hanging but hasn’t fallen yet (we call these widowmakers for a reason)
  • A tree leaning differently than it did yesterday, or with the roots lifting out of the ground on one side
  • A split trunk after a windstorm
  • A tree blocking your driveway, the alley, or a walkway
  • Anything touching the power service to your house

Edmonton gets a few big wind and wet-snow events every year, and the September and October storms are the worst because the trees are still in full leaf. If you’re reading this after one of those, we’re probably already working through the list, but we triage by danger first. A limb on a roof gets a crew before a limb on a lawn.

What To Do Right Now

Stay out from under it. A hanging limb or a cracked trunk can let go with no warning, and it doesn’t take a big one to put someone in the hospital. Keep kids and dogs away.

If a power line is involved, call EPCOR first. Downed or sagging lines are their job, not ours, and not yours. We can’t touch a tree that’s on a live line until the utility has made it safe.

Take photos before anything is moved. Your insurance company will want them, and so will we for the quote.

Don’t try to cut it yourself. A limb under tension does unpredictable things when it’s cut. Most of the chainsaw injuries we hear about are homeowners after a storm.

Then text us the photos. We’ll tell you what it needs, what it’ll cost, and when a crew can be there.

Insurance And Paperwork

If the tree damaged a structure, most home insurance policies cover removing it off the structure. We’ll give you an itemized invoice and before-and-after photos so your adjuster has what they need. The policy usually doesn’t cover a tree that just fell in the yard without hitting anything, so if that’s your situation, don’t be surprised. Either way, emergency work is priced the same way as regular work: by the crew hours it takes. A same-day call-out or a high-risk pick off a roof can carry a premium, and we’ll tell you that up front. Storm work also tends to take longer because everything is tangled, under tension, or on top of something.

Prevent The Next One

Almost every storm call we get was a tree that had been telling on itself for a while. The ones that fail are the ones with a dead top, a big horizontal limb out over the roof, a V-shaped crotch where two trunks meet, mushrooms at the base, or a lean that wasn’t there a few years ago. Our guide to dangerous trees walks through what to look for.

The cheap fix is a prune in the dormant season: take the weight off the limbs over the house and the lines, cut out the deadwood, and the tree rides out the next windstorm instead of landing on the garage. If the tree is past saving, a planned removal on a calm day is a fraction of what the same tree costs to untangle from a roof in the rain. If you’re not sure which one you need, send us a photo. We’ll tell you honestly, and “leave it alone” is an answer we give plenty.

Storm Damage Questions We Get A Lot

Text photos to (780) 266-1919 and we’ll tell you honestly. Dangerous situations (on a house, over a road, hanging over a sidewalk) go to the front of the line, often same day. Trees down in the yard with nothing under them get scheduled in the next few days.

Same crew rate as any other job. Urgent same-day call-outs and high-risk work can add a premium, which we tell you before the crew rolls. Storm damage also usually takes more hours because of how the wood is lying, so the total is often higher than a planned removal of the same tree.

Get everyone out of the room under it, take photos, call your insurer, and text us the photos. We’ll get a crew out to lift it off the structure so you can get the roof tarped. The rest of the tree can usually wait a day or two.

Call EPCOR before you call anyone else. Once they’ve cut power or cleared the line, we’ll take care of the tree.

Generally it’s your problem on your side of the fence, unless the tree was obviously dead or hazardous and they’d been warned. Your own insurance usually handles it (we’re arborists, not lawyers, so check with them). We can clear your side of it either way.

Yes. Heavy wet snow in September and October and ice in the spring are our busiest emergency weeks. Crews work year round.
