Pinnacle birch make a great substitute for the short-life Swedish aspen. With a very similar shape and look (although slower growth rate), you can get all the desired effect from the aspen with 4X the life span and without the relentless, yard ruining suckering! It’s sleek, columnar silhouette, ads a touch of modern elegance to any landscape.

  • Mature Height: 25-30 feet
  • Mature Spread: 10-12 feet
  • Canopy Height: Low canopy, typically 3-5 feet from the ground
  • Growth Rate: Moderate (approximately 1-2 feet per year)
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 2-7 (adapts to a wide range of climates)
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Bloom Time: Does not produce significant flowers (primarily ornamental for foliage and form)
  • Lifespan: 50+ years
  • Soil Preference: Adapts to a wide range of soils as long as they are well-drained
  • Water Preference: Moderate watering; established trees are drought tolerant.

    • The Dakota Pinnacle Birch is a relatively new cultivar, developed in North Dakota in the late 20th century.
    • Birch trees have a long history of cultural significance in many parts of the world. In Celtic cultures, birch was associated with new beginnings and protection.
    • Though the Dakota Pinnacle Birch doesn’t produce significant flowers, birch pollen can be a common allergen. This variety’s minimal flowering reduces the potential for allergy concerns.
